Class Pages

Year 6 recently developed their learning in textiles with another session led by Mrs Dowling. This time we created a class piece of art, inspired by a photograph of a polluted beach, that is in our collage in class. Having looked at photographs of pebbles on a beach, we used the felting techniques to make our own pebbles. These are going to be arranged for display.

Come and see them next time you are in school.

Art Time

We had an art lesson with Mrs Dowling.

We have all enjoyed making our clay containers, that we would like to share the finished results with you!

As part of our buddy time together, we thought we would enter a Lloyds TSB competition to design a banner that welcomes the Olympic torch to our community whwn it comes near us on July 8th. Y3 and Y5 had ‘thinking homework’ to begin with, to identify what makes Colney Heath special, areas of interest and what we would like to share with the Olympic torch community. They then got into buddy groups to start putting their ideas together and designing a banner to represent Colney Heath in the competition.  Over the last few weeks in buddy time, they have been very busy and creative making their banners, they all look amazing! A display of them will be put up in school for all to see! The 2 classes voted on which one should go forward as our winner for the competition, but we had a tie! So we have placed 2 banners together to create a big banner as our entry! The winners all recieved an Olympic pin badge and their joint efforts have been entered. Lloyds TSB closing date is the 13th February and they have 60 ‘cheer packs’ for the best entires to help celebrate the torch relay coming to our community! Fingers crossed!

We have been lucky enough to have Mrs Dowling come and look at some different areas of art with year 5 over the last few weeks. She has looked at the pen and wash technique first, where Year 5 had to do an observational picture of Kentwell Hall. As you can see from our pictures, the results were amazing! Secondly, she completed some felt making with the class. They used merino wool to create their planned design, they then had to wet it with warm water and massage the wool. This felted the wool together to make handmade felt! The children have all taken their felt making home, and were very proud with the end results.

Fire Safety

in Year 2 Class Page

Year 2 had a visit from the fire service.  They were taught about the dangers of fire and how to keep themselves safe.  The fire officers showed the class all the specialist equipment and clothing they use including the fire engine.

They were told the story of  FrancesTheFirefly

Follow these simple steps to keep yourself and your loved ones safe in the home:

  • Fit a smoke alarm on every level of your home
  • Test your smoke alarm regularly – it’s just one press of a button
  • Change your battery once a year or invest in a 10-year alarm
  • Vacuum the alarm casing twice a year to ensure dust isn’t blocking the sensor
  • Plan your escape route – two different routes will help everyone at home know the quickest and safest way out
  • If you do not have a smoke alarm you can arrange a free Home Fire Safety Check – use the online form at www.hertsdirect.org/fire or call Hertfordshire Fire and Rescue Service on 0300 1234046

Year 1 Pirate Day

February 8, 2012

in Year 1 Class Page

What a day we had being pirates.

Today year 3 had a lovely day out at  the Roald Dahl Museum at Great Missenden. We heard all about Roald Dahl’s life and about how he wrote his stories. We enjoyed looking at all the exhibits, dressing up as some of the characters, designing our own characters, making mini films, creating our own poems, and much more. After the museum we made our way up to the chuchyard to see Roald Dahl’s grave, and as we walked along the High Street we looked at some of the places that inspired his stories. Finally we spent a happy half hour at the local park, despite the snow!

Thanks to the kind parents who gave up their time to accompany us on our trip!

In our science lesson today we made our own carbon dioxide gas by making homemade fizzy lemonade! We worked in groups of 2′s and 3′s and had to follow instructions on how to make it. As we added the baking powder, we had to observed what happened, as this was when the chemical reaction happened to make the gas. We were able to add sugar to suit our taste buds! We really enjoyed our practical science lesson, here are some pictures of us during the lesson.

We have been looking at the art of an American artist called Eric Joyner. He uses images of robots doing human-like activities in much of his work. Watch out for the doughnuts! Or should that be donuts?

If you have time, take a look at more of Joyner’s art. Which one do you prefer?
