As part of our buddy time together, we thought we would enter a Lloyds TSB competition to design a banner that welcomes the Olympic torch to our community whwn it comes near us on July 8th. Y3 and Y5 had ‘thinking homework’ to begin with, to identify what makes Colney Heath special, areas of interest and what we would like to share with the Olympic torch community. They then got into buddy groups to start putting their ideas together and designing a banner to represent Colney Heath in the competition. Over the last few weeks in buddy time, they have been very busy and creative making their banners, they all look amazing! A display of them will be put up in school for all to see! The 2 classes voted on which one should go forward as our winner for the competition, but we had a tie! So we have placed 2 banners together to create a big banner as our entry! The winners all recieved an Olympic pin badge and their joint efforts have been entered. Lloyds TSB closing date is the 13th February and they have 60 ‘cheer packs’ for the best entires to help celebrate the torch relay coming to our community! Fingers crossed!
Today year 3 had a lovely day out at the Roald Dahl Museum at Great Missenden. We heard all about Roald Dahl’s life and about how he wrote his stories. We enjoyed looking at all the exhibits, dressing up as some of the characters, designing our own characters, making mini films, creating our own poems, and much more. After the museum we made our way up to the chuchyard to see Roald Dahl’s grave, and as we walked along the High Street we looked at some of the places that inspired his stories. Finally we spent a happy half hour at the local park, despite the snow!

We have been working hard this term at lots of different activities.
In Literacy we have been reading The Twits by Roald Dahl and writing our own chapters; we have also written book reviews. We have now started reading Charlie and the Chocolate factory, which we are finding very exciting!
In Maths we have been learning about rounding and ordering numbers, about odd and even numbers and numbers that add up to 10, 100 and 1000. We also have a new shop in the classroom where we can practise using money.
In PE we have been doing gymnastics, working out different shapes and balances. In geography we are looking at the local area; we have used ICT to edit text and to copy and paste pictures and maps of the area into a word document. With our year 5 buddies we are designing our own banners to highlight the local community for the Olympics.

Spring Term Newsletter
This morning we enjoyed a sports session led by Phil from Apex Sports. We played lots of exciting team games!
This week in Buddy time, Year 5 started teaching Year 3 the art of speed stacking! Year 5 planned their first lesson together and then gave their buddy an introduction to speed stacking with rules and handy hints, then they progressed onto the first activity. Year 5 were working on their leadership skills and needed to show team work, communication skills and patience!
For homework this week, children in year 3 were asked to make a pyramid. They could use paper, card, clay … or anything else they could think of that was suitable. The children produced a fabulous variety of structures. Some of the pyramids were indeed made of card, paper or clay, while others were made of lego, saltdough, playdough…and even sugar! Well done to all the children!
In our topic on Ancient Egypt we have been learning about the different ways in which dead bodies were preserved. We carried out an experiment to find out the best way to preserve a piece of apple. We left slices of apple in four places to see what would happen:
1. In an open pot. 2. In a closed pot. 3. In a pot of sand. 4. In a pot of salt.
We watched for 2 weeks to see what changes would take place and we found that the apple in the closed pot was the best preserved, although the apple in the pot of salt was the best colour!
We were totally overwhelmed by the very creative entries for our Olympic dish homework competition! It gave the teachers a very tough job deciding on an overall winner! We had some class winners who recieved a 2012 pin badge, 4 highly commended entries and an overall winner, whose entry has gone through to represent our school in the competition.
