We have all enjoyed making our clay containers, that we would like to share the finished results with you!

As part of our buddy time together, we thought we would enter a Lloyds TSB competition to design a banner that welcomes the Olympic torch to our community whwn it comes near us on July 8th. Y3 and Y5 had ‘thinking homework’ to begin with, to identify what makes Colney Heath special, areas of interest and what we would like to share with the Olympic torch community. They then got into buddy groups to start putting their ideas together and designing a banner to represent Colney Heath in the competition. Over the last few weeks in buddy time, they have been very busy and creative making their banners, they all look amazing! A display of them will be put up in school for all to see! The 2 classes voted on which one should go forward as our winner for the competition, but we had a tie! So we have placed 2 banners together to create a big banner as our entry! The winners all recieved an Olympic pin badge and their joint efforts have been entered. Lloyds TSB closing date is the 13th February and they have 60 ‘cheer packs’ for the best entires to help celebrate the torch relay coming to our community! Fingers crossed!
We have been lucky enough to have Mrs Dowling come and look at some different areas of art with year 5 over the last few weeks. She has looked at the pen and wash technique first, where Year 5 had to do an observational picture of Kentwell Hall. As you can see from our pictures, the results were amazing! Secondly, she completed some felt making with the class. They used merino wool to create their planned design, they then had to wet it with warm water and massage the wool. This felted the wool together to make handmade felt! The children have all taken their felt making home, and were very proud with the end results.
In our science lesson today we made our own carbon dioxide gas by making homemade fizzy lemonade! We worked in groups of 2′s and 3′s and had to follow instructions on how to make it. As we added the baking powder, we had to observed what happened, as this was when the chemical reaction happened to make the gas. We were able to add sugar to suit our taste buds! We really enjoyed our practical science lesson, here are some pictures of us during the lesson.
Our art unit this half term has been conatiners. We have spent time investigating different types of conatiners focusing on their purpose, what they are made of and designs. Then we all put our creative hats on and designed our own. Next we got the clay out and made our conatiners! Here are some pictures of us in the making process! We are going to paint them once they are dry.
Here are some pictures of some of the things we have been doing in class this term:
P.E Gymnastics - investigating balancing using different parts of our body and different ways of travelling. P.E Uni Hoc - learning indoor hockey skills.
Art – looking a different examples of containers and designing our own to make out of clay in a few weeks time.
Science Gases all around us – lots of experiments related to air! Looking at where the air is and what happens to air? Were going to be making air rockets next and seeing who can build the fastest one!
Topic The Tudors - researching ‘who was Henry Vlll?’ and completing posters to show our answers.
ICT – looking at simple programming.
We have been so busy in Year 5 so far in 2012, so many amazing things to include!
2012 is now here. Please read my newsletter to see what the children are learning this term.
Here are just some of the things we have been doing in class recently include: making snowflakes with our Y3 buddies (that are up in the hall as Christmas decorations), using drills, saws and glue guns to make a moving cam mechanism for our Christmas moving toy, using digital blue cameras and modelling clay to make models and to film our own nativity animation film, looking at ‘pop art’, making up dances to ‘thriller’ and having fun in Literacy performing raps! We have been so busy in Year 5, so many amazing things to include!
This week in Buddy time, Year 5 started teaching Year 3 the art of speed stacking! Year 5 planned their first lesson together and then gave their buddy an introduction to speed stacking with rules and handy hints, then they progressed onto the first activity. Year 5 were working on their leadership skills and needed to show team work, communication skills and patience!
This week in Y5 we enjoyed trying some indoor athletics in our P.E lesson. We had 6 activities, all had bronze, silver and gold medal challenges that we had to work towards. We had to set ourselves a challenge target and see if could achieve this. We shared what skills we used in each activity and also came up with platinum level challenges to make the tasks more challenging.
My favourite were the ropes! I enjoyed climbing them and i achieved the gold medal challenge by getting to the top of it! Tom B
My best was definitely throwing the medicine ball! I liked throwing the heavy ball as far as I could, I got the gold medal challenge. Angelos
I liked the standing high jump because you thought it would be rerally hard but actually it was good fun and quite easy. Steven
I liked the standing high jump and the ropes. The standing high jump because I liked to see how high you could jump above your stretch, and the ropes because I got to the top and achieved gold medal challenge. Ellie
Probably the speed bounce! I got the gold medal challenge and it was so much fun. My legs didnt even ache after all of that jumping! Kelly
I say the medicine ball was my favourite, I liked throwing the ball and I achieved the silver medal challenge. We made it harder by sitting down and trying to throw it. Amber
My favourite was the medicine ball because it is a fun activity. You have to see how far you can throw the heavy ball. Alice
My favourite activity was standing long jump because I liked to see how far I could jump. I got a silver medal in the challenge. Molly
I liked the standing triple jump because it was new to me and I had never done it before! It was a good challenge to do but quite tricky. Daniel B
My favourite was the bean bag challenge. I had to concentrate to get all the bean bags in the correct coloured hoop. We made the challenge harder by throwing with your opposite hand. Orlaith
