Year 6′s fundraising efforts continued this weekend at the Craft Fair. The Best Banz stall raised £66 thanks to the joint effort of a huge team of workers who had helped prepare a dazzling array of Friendship Bands for sale. Crafty entrepreneurs in the company also realised a further profit could be made by demonstrating the technique as an activity at the fair, enticing customers with the promise of making their own bands. Meanwhile, a further band of Year 6 took it in turns to sell chocolates and sweets that we had made. This also made a profit of over £50.  Well done to everyone who helped or supported over the weekend.

There are some talented artists in Year 6, although many of the children need convincing that they “can do it”. Recently, we have been looking at the work of Thomas Barnardo, using photographs he took in the nineteenth century of street children. We used pencil, watercolour and ink to create our own versions of the haunting black and white images. Having looked at the photos, we studied some similar portraits submitted by Year 5 children for an exhibition at the National Gallery, in London.

On first viewing these, Year 6 were doubtful of their ability to produce such high quality work ! Some of the comments heard ranged from disbelief to total denial that they too could do it. Now, a few weeks later, we are finishing our paintings and reviewing what we have learnt about ourselves as well as our ability in art !

This shows what happens when you believe you can achieve something great.

Please pop into class to see our paintings and read why we are so proud of what we have learnt.

Year 6 Science

November 23, 2011

in Year 6 Class Page

Year 6 have been busy scientists recently. We have been learning about light with Mr Hinton on a Wednesday, and as you can see we have created lasers using mirrors and torches.

We have also been learning about changing the state of a material, which involves melting chocolate. We have also been learning about separating materials by dissolving, filtering, evaporating and sieving. Here you can also see we have been putting our dissolving knowledge to practical use as we prepare fudge for our Victorian Sweet Stall.

Come along to the Craft Fair on Saturday to sample our delicious Science !

Year 6 have been learning about the imagery that poets use in their writing. Over the last two weeks we have been getting to grips with personification, similie, metaphor and other complex devices that poets use to entertain us !

This week we read a poem called “Silver” by Walter de la Mare, where he describes moonlight as ”quiet, and shy as she creeps through the night painting everything silver ” – as one of Year 6 described it. Very perceptive ! So, inspired by this we then wrote our own poems, this time using the theme “Golden” and applying it to the sun who we felt was anything but shy !

All the poems are presented in a class book for you to enjoy. Look out for it next time you visit the library.

We were totally overwhelmed by the very creative entries for our Olympic dish homework competition! It gave the teachers a very tough job deciding on an overall winner! We had some class winners who recieved a 2012 pin badge, 4 highly commended entries and an overall winner, whose entry has gone through to represent our school in the competition.

Highly commended – Sasha T  YR, Ryan B  Y3, Chelsea H  Y4 and Kim B  Y6

Overall winner – Owen P  Y5

Well done to everyone who entered, all of the entries are displayed in our library, so come in and have a look!

This week in Maths we did a whole class investigation on patterns. Usually, the class Maths lessons are differentiated so that children have learning that enables them to move their understanding on to the next level for them. However, we also use investigations such as this one, that enable everyone to show what they can do on the same problem, with questions becoming more complex as the child progresses through the investigation.

Each child was given 4 cubes and asked to make a T shape with them. This was called T1. They then added a cube in each direction for T2, that took the total number of cubes to 7. If you look at the example included here you can see that the children were initially asked to work out how many cubes would be in T5.

Some children used cubes to make this, but then spotted that they could work this answer out by adding three for each tower. From this you can see how the questions the children were asked became more in depth, eventually leading to the formation of an algebraic formula ( not shown in this example).  You can also see how this mathematician included all her ideas, including those that weren’t successful ! ( The symbol “VF” means that there has been verbal feedback from the teacher at this point).

You could try a similar problem to this at home using matchsticks to make squares and seeing what happens to the total number of sticks as you add more sticks. Make one square with 4 sticks. Using three more sticks, add these on to your existing square. How many sticks in total ? Keep going. You can use similar questions to those on the example as you go through the problem. If you would like similar pattern type investigations, let me know and I will find some you can access on line.

Ben : During Year 6 this term it has been brilliant, we have had so  many opportunities to learn different things and show our new found skills in our work. I have been proud of my work and I am sure others have been proud of theirs too.

HOT OFF THE PRESS NEWS : Fri 3.30 -  £100.04 profit at the cake sale. Fantastic, well done Taylor, Connor and their Mums. Thanks to all for the delicious cakes !

Have a smashing holiday….

On Friday we had two real life dragons set up their den in the Year 6 classroom. Mrs Allen, Chair of the PTA, and Mr Wilson, Parent Governor, came to give our business plans a dragon-style grilling ! Each Year 6 company gave a presentation on their fund raising ideas , in the hope of securing a loan or receiving valuable advice from the Dragons.

The C.E.O and Directors faced some tough questions, but none buckled under the pressure, and we now have approval for all our ideas. Everyone learnt something, with advice being incorporated into the existing plans. We are now preparing detailed spreadsheets ready for a final scrutiny !

The first of our successful bids was the idea for a Cake Sale, which has been organised for this Friday by Connor, Taylor J, and their mums. Hopefully we will make a good profit.

Next week is half term, and probably much to everyone’s relief , THERE IS NO HOMEWORK !!! However, keep up your reading and times tables practise, and there is a homework challenge on this website if you wish to participate.

Friday afternoon will be a well-earned Golden Time. The most popular vote was outside toys such as bikes, scooters etc. Helmets must be worn with bikes.

October Half Term Homework due in Monday 31st.

Last Friday we entertained our Grandparents and invited local guests to tea in the church. We spent a lovely afternoon looking at photographs, talking about memories and enjoying games and delicious scones together. We will be using the photos and notes we made in our History project. Many thanks to everyone, especially those of you who came to join us from quite some distance away, and special thanks to Mr and Mrs King and Mrs Stuckey, for arranging the church and tea so beautifully. It was a wonderful afternoon for all involved.

On Tuesday we visited St. Albans, using the village bus, to take part in a re-enactment of two Victorian trials in the original courtroom. We were shocked to find the defendents in both cases were about the same age as we were, yet were treated as adults – including their punishments ! The museum staff were very impressed with the children’s reading, commenting on how clear, expressive and fluent they were. All that practise at home pays off in the most unlikely places and ways !!! For some strange reason, the highlight of the trip seemed to be a chance to go in the cells, hidden beneath the courtroom, with all the children insisting on being shut in for a few moments to get the full experience. Luckily, the doors remained unlocked and we were able to escape into the town where we went to see the old workhouse, prison and the houses built during this period. Back at school the children have used these experiences in some fantastic writing, which you will have the opportunity to see this week at Parents’ Consultations. I look forward to seeing you during the week.
