Year 3 Blog Spring Term 2026

Blog 4 Week beg 26.1.26

What a wet and rainy week this week...almost biblical! We have been working mega hard this week with a lot of new learning so here goes!

Maths Mr Davies (Herts Uni student) taught the 'distributive law ' for multiplication. I can hear you saying 'What on earth?' This is a way of multiplying 2 digit numbers by 1 digit eg 29x8.

  • First you split 29 into 20 and 8.
  • Next you multiply 20x8 =160 and 9x8=72
  • Finally you add 160+72=232   The class picked this method up super quick! We also learnt how to find fractions of amounts eg 3/8 of 64. First you divide by the denominator (bottom no) then multiply by the numerator (top). eg 64 divided by 8=8x3=24.

English We finished writing out Wonderland stories and edited these.

Science We learnt how to keep pets healthy. We did lots of research using books and  websites which showed how well our reading skills have progressed.

Art We did some printing using a block string print.

RE We learnt about the ritual of wudu-how Muslims wash before they pray.

History We learnt about the House of Wisdom in Baghdad, This is a place where very clever people went to share ideas and talk about inventions. Scribes would copy out texts from the extensive library. They would get paid by the weight of the book in gold!

Spellings......all based on quest......question...questioned....questioning....request...conquest....

Phew....an action packed week!

Blog 3 Week beg 19.1.26

A horrible week weather wise but a little bit of rain hasn't put us off our learning! As usual....an action packed week.

Maths We have had a lot to contend with this week....the associative law and distributive law. What a mouthful! These are both to do with multiplication. We looked at calculations such as 7x5x2 and tried to find the 'easiest' way. Is it easier to multiply 7x5 then x2 or 2x5 then x7? This is called the associative law! The distributive law  helps us work out calculations such as 15x8 which is quite tricky! First we split up the 15 into 10 and 5 then multiply 10x8...5x8 and add the 2 amounts together eg 80 +40=120.  It sounds tricky but we got to grips with this really well!

English We planned out our own wonderland and have started to write our own stories.

Science We talked about what would make a good breakfast and made a poster explaining this.

History We compared the homes of Baghdad and Britain in the 8th century. The people of Baghdad had amazing homes made from brick with fointains and palm trees while the people of Britain were living in little huts made of straw and wood.

Computing We spoke about protecting your online identity and what to post online.

Spelling.....all the words this week begin with the prefix inter..... such as           interrupt...interrupted....interest...interesting....interview...interviewer.

Joke of the week...

What do robots eat when they are on a diet?

Microchips!!!!

Over and out until next week....

Blog 2 Week beg 12.1.26

A busy old week in year 3! Our trip on Wednesday was lovely, the people that talk to us at the mosque, Gurdwara and church could not be more welcoming. We saw a lot of new things and were able to show off our learning which the adults there were very impressed with. The children were so well behaved and had a great day! I hope you enjoyed looking at the photos in assembly.

We also had to pack in our assembly, I hope you enjoyed hearing about their learning and the drums......watch out for more on these....they pack quite a punch!!

Maths This week we have been learning about division including remainders.

English We have been writing about the Mad Hatter's tea party and the Queen of Hearts who is one big scary lady!

History We learnt about the city of Baghdad and how it is laid out.

RE We learnt what to expect at the Gurdwara. Did you know that Sikh means student and Guru means teacher. There are 10 gurus and the 11th is their special book. It is treated like a human and put to bed every night in its own room.

Spelling dis....mis.....dif words....
