Summer Term Blog 2026
Week beg 4.5.26
It was lovely to see so many of you at the class assembly on Friday, hopefully you learnt something about sculpture but also about what your children have been learning. It's quite amazing what we pack into a day so if your child is a wee bit tired at the end of the day, it's quite understandable! So onto this week..... to be honest we spent quite a bit of time practising our assembly and of course it was a 4 day week!
However......
English We completed our instruction stories and edited them. This is quite tricky. We use something called ARMS. This stands for...Adding a word/sentence....Removing a word/sentence....Moving a word/sentence and Substituting a word. The children choose a chunk of work to improve and then write this on a flap that is put over the original bit of work. It's quite a tricky thing to do! We are beginning to use a thesaurus to find better words so instead of saying walk you could say....run...sprint...stroll...amble.....you get the idea!
PE We had an extra session for PE this week from the people that usually go into year 4 and 5. We looked at healthy eating and the eatwell plate and the different food categories. Then the class played 'Rollerball' outside. They must have been exhausted on Wednesday! We still have Mr D from Non Stop Action on Thursday. Sports Day is not too far away....May 21st.
Art We started to make mice sculptures...using the egg boxes you have sent in. This is work in progress!
Spelling.....ou words. The words this week all contained ou which can be pronounced as 'u'...'ow' and 'oo' and 'oa' Some of the words were.....touch...enough....double....country...touch....group.....through....you...youth....shoulder.
And of course...joke of the week
What instrument can be found in a bathroom?
A tuba toothpaste!!!
Over and out until next week!!
Week beg 27.4.26
Welcome to May! We have packed a lot into our week. We have been scientists....mathematicicans....historians and athletes. Please don't forget our final assembly of the year on Friday 8th to show our learning.
Maths We have been learning the 'bus stop' method of dividing. The class picked this up really quickly. They would be able to show it to you at home so why not ask them!
English We are looking at a book called Instructions which is full of....instructions! You need to be quite bossy with instructions and use verbs. eg Walk quickly past the oak tree. We created storymaps with pictures and are busy writing our own instructions using verbs.....adverbs...prepositions and adjectives.
History We are lucky to have some great artefacts from the very first Colney Heath School which was on a different site. The headteacher at the time wrote a log book to explain why children were absent so we have been looking at it. Children were absent due to measles....potato and acorn picking....collecting hay and nits! We also looked at the old punishment book where children got strokes of the cane for.....persistent talking....bullying....chasing girls with scissors and messing about in the 'lavatories'. I think the class are glad to be attending school in 2026 and not 1942!
Art We have looked at a range of different sculptures and sculptors. It's quite amazing what you can use to sculpt. We used tinfoil to make people in the style of Alberto Giacometti. You can see our efforts on Friday!
Spellings.....this week the words all contain y but a y can make a different sound such as...ee.....igh.... and i.
gym......system.....rythmn....myth.....physical....baby...merry....rhyme.....type.....
Joke of the week...
Why don't pandas wear shoes?
They like to go bear foot!
Enjoy the bank holiday....over and out until next week!
Welcome back to the last term of the year....doesn't time fly! I hope you had a great Easter and did lots of nice things. I went to Belfast to see the Titanic Experience with two of my sisters.....its a great place to go! The children have settled back in well and have cracked on with their learning. So onto this week....
Maths We have been learning how to divide including with remainders. This is where times table knowledge is really needed so a plea for this final term.....TTRockstars please, even 10 mins a day would really help.
English We wrote a poem called My Street full of sounds and calligrams....ask your child what these are.
Science Our new topic is Light so we learnt about light sources such as lamps, candles, torches and fire. We also learnt how we see.
History We are learning about the local area and the history of the school. You might not know but the school was originally across the road where Scholars court is. Our school is built on an old potato field!
PE PE is on Tuesdays and Thursdays. PLEASE can all children have their kits on these days. They are doing non stop action with Mr D.
Spellings....Root morpheme hap.......happy....happier....happiest....perhaps.....mishap.....hapless.
